Developing the right perspective

It was a state holiday. It was a glorious afternoon. It was the Boston marathon.

Once again, our world was caught off guard by evil.

The joy and celebration of a beautiful spring day was destroyed by two bomb blasts. The world changed.

Though we are across the continent, we are still affected and disturbed.

I have stopped trying to figure out why bad things happen. I cannot get into the minds of others to explore why they would do such things.

I don’t know how it feels to suffer such loss. But I am confident of one thing. I know that evil will not win!

God assures us that “evildoers will be cut off, but those who wait for the Lord, they will inherit the land,” (Ps 37:9).

“He who is steadfast in righteousness will attain to life, and he who pursues evil will bring about his own death,” (Prov 11:19).

God’s advice to us is to wait for Him and be steadfast in righteousness.

It’s difficult, even for believers, to have a good attitude during such bad times.

The Old Testament prophet Habakkuk puts it all in perspective, “Though the fig tree does not bud and there are no grapes on the vines, though the olive crop fails and the fields produce no food, though there are no sheep in the pen and no cattle in the stalls, yet I will rejoice in the Lord, I will be joyful in God my Savior. The Sovereign Lord is my strength; he makes my feet like the feet of a deer, he enables me to go on the heights,” (Hab. 3:17-19).
