Annual cruiser ride winds through Carson City’s west side

Dozens of cyclists hit the streets Wednesday evening for the annual West Side Cruiser Ride as part of the Bike Month celebration. The bike ride comes in the middle of Bike to Work week and the Corporate Challenge, a contest between local businesses to see which employees can rack up the most miles.

Muscle Powered Citizens for a Walkable and Bikeable Carson City is celebrating Bike to Work Day on Friday. Commuter stations at Comma Coffee, LA Bakery, San Rafael Coffee Company, and Bistro@Bryan have been established with free coffee for cyclists.

Motorists should be on the look out for bicyclists, and cyclists should dress visibly and wear a helmet.

Muscle Powered and Chapter 388 of Vietnam Veterans of America will co-lead an easy five-mile family cruiser ride beginning at 2:30 p.m. leaving from Telegraph Square in Carson City. Helmets are required, and children must be accompanied by a parent.

After the ride, a bicycle obstacle course, slow race, and newspaper boy races are planned.

Winners of the week-long Corporate Challenge will be announced at 5 p.m. Raffles and a tricycle show at the local gallery, along with great food and live music will be make for a fun family outing.

Winner of the raffle for two new cruiser bikes will be announced around 6 p.m.

Other events continue throughout the month, including a Soulcycler presentation at 6 p.m. May 24 at the First United Methodist Church by former Nevada Appeal photographer Rick Gunn, featuring photos from his bicycle trip around the world.
