140 years ago

The Frencho Sclavoniean Switzers who frequent the lodging house just north of Rosser’s new buildings were out in the vacant lot of the old hay yard yesterday playing a game of balls. The balls they rolled were apparently croquet balls and they seemed to enjoy the sport. Passers by will please look and gain the particulars.

130 years ago

Yesterday the Eureka journalist, W.J. Penrose, whose body is studded with Base Range bullets and who still runs a live newspaper went up to Lake Tahoe with his wife by private conveyance. Penrose is heading the Base Range Scientific Expedition to find a subterranean outlet, the big fish and petrified forest. A report will be prepared for congressional action. He took along rough field notes of localities furnished by the Appeal office.

100 years ago

Within a short time, the great battleship Nevada is to be launched. It is figured that the fighting craft will be placed in the water by the first of October. Little Miss Siebert, the niece of Gov. Oddie, is to break the bottle of sparkling wine over the prow of the monster.

70 years ago

Indians in Nevada, aware of the national food emergency, have substantially increased production of food crops during the past six months, says a report received from the Indian Service by Senator Pat McCarran.

A building permit for the construction of a multi-million dollar, 13-story resort hotel at the south shore of Lake Tahoe was issued Friday to the Del E. Webb Corporation.

A rash of nine lightening sparked fires scorched more than 2,500 acres between Pyramid Lake and Carson Valley the past few days.
