Championship: After the swim Sunday before last, the fight between the Empire and Carson Gamins was decided as the Romans, by champions selected by each side. Young Dutch Nick took the ring for Empire and Albert Jones for Carson. Jones took the victory, which was short lived. Young Dutch Nick’s sister pitched into him and drove him, beyond the town away off into the sagebrush towards Carson.

130 years ago

The election of John W. Mackay to be director of the Postal Telegraph Company and who has put a half a million into stock of the corporation, means he wants to give Jay Gould a fight for the telegraphic business. Stockton Herald.

100 years ago

The Thompson baseball nine, which has been defeating everything in the state, finally bet defeat last Sunday, one to nothing against the Lahontan team. If the baseball committee could get the two tenants here for Labor Day, it would result in one of the hottest games on record.

70 years ago

Seven new passenger car tires, two new truck and bus tires, 10 truck re-cap tires, two grade III tires and three new inner tubes for passenger cars were issued this week by the Ormsby County rationing board.

50 years ago

August continued to be a tragic month for auto accidents with five claimed in four separate accidents this past weekend. The deaths boosted the states toll for the month to 109, compared to 94 last year.

The largest purse in the history of the Jalopy division at T-Car Speedway, an estimated $400, will highlight the main event Saturday night. Dave Lester has his sights on winning that race.
