130 Years Ago The Nevada rifle team trophy: The trophy is now on exhibition at Thaxter’s drug store. It represents Caulois, an old Gaelic chieftain, who fought against Julius Caesar. The horse and figure combine to form a strong picture… The horse is standing on a knoll and the Gaul is armed with spear and shield… A picked team from 10 California regiments will come to Nevada to try and wrest the prize from its present holders…120 Years Ago All sorts: There was a political row in Gold Hill in which James Cunningham was stabbed by Joe Farnum with a miner’s candlestick… Farnum was jailed. 70 Years Ago Help needed: Nevada boys 14 to 17 may supply help needed on Nevada Ranches during production time. The greater number of these youth may ultimately be forced to bear the entire load of supply needs of farm and ranch help because of the drafting of boys in the elder classes.50 Years Ago Ice cloud: The United States plans to dump 95 gallons of water into space on the longest and most ambitious flight ever attempted by its new Saturn super rocket. The Saturn is being put through a series of 10 research and development shots in preparation for its main task of lifting teams of three U.S. astronauts into orbit aboard Apollo spaceships starting in 1965.30 Years Ago Free Tylenol: Johnson & Johnson Co. states it has a “moral imperative” to return Tylenol capsules to the market and has unveiled a new tamper-resistant package… The action followed several weeks of anxiety around the country after seven people died from capsules laced with cyanide.10 Years Ago Carson High School’s annual craft fair will feature photo opportunities with the jolly old elf as part of the two-day fundraiser… Besides a chance to talk to Santa, shoppers will be able to complete their wish lists and be entertained in the process…• Sue Ballew is the daughter of Bill Dolan, who wrote this column for the Nevada Appeal from 1947 until his death in 2006.
