The public is welcome to join Nevada National Guard soldiers and airmen Saturday for the third annual Remembrance Run to commemorate the lives of the four victims of the Sept. 6, 2011, shooting at the International House of Pancakes.

The free, informal, untimed five-kilometer run/walk is set to start in the parking lot at IHOP, 3883 S. Carson St., at 6:30 a.m. and finish at the Nevada Guard's Office of the Adjutant General complex at 2460 Fairview Dr. Reflective running/walking gear is recommended.

The run will honor Nevada Guardsmen Lt. Col. Heath Kelly, 35, Master Sgt. Christian Riege, 38, and Sgt. 1st Class Miranda McElhiney, 31, along with civilian Florence Donovan-Gunderson, 67, who were killed. Seven other patrons were injured when 32-year-old Eduardo Sencion opened fire on the restaurant. He later killed himself.

Maj. Laura Boldry, one of the originators of the run/walk, said the event allows the entire community to symbolically bring the soldiers back to their home unit.

"They didn't make it back that day, but this event allows us to bring our thoughts and memories of our friends back home to the Office of the Adjutant General," Boldry said. "As soldiers, we don't leave anyone behind. I want them to always know they're never forgotten and we always think of them."
