Sep. 3, 1931 - March 6, 2013
Mary Alice Swain was called by her God to join Him on Wednesday, March 6, 2013 at 8:30 a. m. at her home in Minden, NV. Mary Alice had been battling cancer of the throat; her third bout with the disease, for the past year and mounted a valiant fight, as her doctors and friends can attest.
Mary Alice was born in Homewood, Illinois on September 3, 1931 to Frank and Ethyl Busch. Mary Alice attended elementary school in Hinsdale, IL and high school at Kemper Episcopal Women’s Academy in Kenosha, Wisconsin. She completed her education at Smith College in Northfield, Mass., graduating with a BA and honors.
Mary Alice married David Swain on December 29, 1953; they spent three and a half years serving in the U.S. Coast Guard in Norfold, VA and returned to the Chicago area in 1957 where Dave joined his father in business. Mary Alice replaced her mother-in-law as bookkeeper in that business and held down that position for 25 years. Mary Alice and David had three children; Sheryl Patia, David and Douglas, as well as, five grandchildren and a great-granddaughter, just ten days ago. Mary Alice and David were married for 59 years.
Both of Mary Alice’ sons had problems with mental retardation, so a great deal of Mary Alice’s time during the early years of her marriage was spent taking them to various special tutors and programs. She was, however, also very much civically inclined and served as the President of the DuPage County League of Women Voters for five years during which she began a court watching program which is still active today. She also served as a member of the Board of Directors of the Women’s Western Golf Assn. for four years. She really enjoyed being a mother, wife and homemaker and to the delight of her family, she became a self-taught gourmet cook. Mary Alice played piano, had an excellent voice, and sang in her church choir in Illinois for over 20 years. She had a laugh that would light up a room and truly loved life and her many friends.
Mary Alice is survived by her husband, David; daughter, Sheryl Patia; son, David; five grandchildren; one great-grandchild; a sister and brother-in-law, Barbara and Peter Mackinnon; a nephew, Rick Busch; and a niece, Judy Swaim. She deeply loved each one of them and that love was returned many times. She will be sorely missed indeed.
Anyone who may wish to make a gift in memory of Mary Alice should send it to: Beverly Farm Foundation -- 6301 Humbert Rd., Godfrey, Illinois, 62035.
A memorial service will be held for Mary Alice at the Lifepoint Church on Stephanie Lane in Minden, NV at 10 a.m., Saturday morning, April 13, 2013. All who knew Mary Alice are cordially invited to attend.
