Donald Martin Schulz, a native and lifetime Nevadan, died on May 17, 2013 at the age of 77. He was born in Reno to Otto R. Schulz and Gertrude Quinlan Schulz. He attended St. Thomas Grammar School and served as a faithful altar boy at St. Thomas Aquinas Church. Don attended Bishop Manogue High School from 1949 to 1951 when he transferred to Reno High School, class of 1953.
Don attended the University of Nevada until his enlistment in the United States Army in 1954. He served in the United States Army Far East Command in Japan. He was honorably discharged from active duty in 1957, with both a Good Conduct Medal and a National Defense Service Medal. He returned to UNR and completed his studies, graduating from UNR in 1960 with a degree in business administration. In 1959, Don married Kathleen Magee. In the 1960s, Don worked for the Internal Revenue Service, the accounting firm of Kafoury, Armstrong and Bernard in Reno, and later for the Nevada Department of Transportation. Don held a Nevada real estate broker’s license from 1964 until his death.
In 1973, Don opened his CPA practice in Carson City. In the early 1990s the Division for Firms of the AICPA designated Don as a peer review auditor. In 1998 Don returned to the Nevada Department of Transportation as an auditor until his retirement.
Don worked throughout his life to perfect the water rights appurtenant to his grandfather’s homestead on Clear Creek in Jack’s Valley.
Don is survived by his wife of 54 years, Kathleen; daughter, Margaret and son-in-law, Stephen Loh of Wappingers Falls, NY; and son, Martin and daughter-in-law, Beverly Schulz of Naperville, IL. In addition he is survived by grandchildren, Eric (Courtney) Speron of San Clemente CA, Roman (Sarah) Speron of Burlingame, CA, Brittany (Michael) Lilly of Downers Grove, IL, Ensign John Schulz, USCG , McKinzie Schulz, and Kendall and Keith Loh; great grandchildren are Abigail, Brooklyn, Anna, Eve, and Vivienne. Don’s sister, Peggy Mohr resides in Vancouver, WA; and his brother, Otto R. Schulz resides in Reno.
Don’s Memorial Mass will be offered Saturday, May 25, at 10 a.m. in the North Chapel at St.Teresa of Avila Catholic Church in Carson City. The family will recite the rosary at 9:30 a.m. just prior to the Mass. A luncheon will follow the mass. In lieu of flowers, please donate to a favorite charity.
