Obituary: Dwayne “Doc” Cottom

May 12, 1939 - Oct. 22, 2013

Dwayne “Doc” Cottom, 74, of Carson City, passed away October 22, 2013. Doc was born May 12, 1939 in Cherryvale, Kansas to Homer Eugene and Marjorie (Hileman) Cottom. After graduating from Van Nuys High School, he joined the United States Air Force. During his time with the USAF, he graduated from the Air Force Noncommissioned Officers Academy and attended Cisco Junior College in Abilene, Texas. Doc has a long distinguished career of 23 years in the Air Force, retiring in 1982 with the rank of Master Sergeant. Upon retiring from the USAF, he moved to Nevada and was an aircraft technician at Omac, Inc. After his employment with Omac, he became a Property Inventory Clerk at the University of Nevada Board of Regents, retiring from Nevada State Prisons Maintenance Department in 2000.

Doc entered the Masonic Bodies at Torrejon Airbase, Spain in 1975 and was a life member of Masonic Lodge #33 in Gardnerville and a life member of Masonic Lodge #12 in Genoa. He was a member of the Scottish Rite/Kerak Shrine in Reno, Past Master of Centennial Lodge #47 in Carson City, and Past Patron of Esther Chapter #3 in Carson City and Order of White Shrine. During his retirement years he owned, operated and was the instructor of Liberty Certified Firearms Training, was an NRA life member, served Explorer Post in Carson City and belonged to the Nevada National Guard Reserve. He enjoyed dancing, camping, and military history. Doc will best be remembered for his incredible generosity and his contagious laugh.

Doc is survived by his loving companion, Mary; daughter, Debbie McKee (Pleas) of Campbell, Texas; sons, Matt Cottom (Debbra) of Sparks, Nevada and Clint Cottom of Tomball, Texas and four grandchildren. A graveside service will be held at Lone Mountain Cemetery, Veterans section in Carson City, Nevada with full Military Honors on November 26, 2013 at 1:00 p.m.
