Sheriff's Office seeks man who reportedly approached boy on Saliman Road

The Carson City Sheriff’s Office seeks help finding a man suspected of trying to lure a boy into his van Wednesday on Saliman Road.

The suspect stopped his minivan at 8:05 a.m. and asked the boy if he needed a ride, Sheriff Ken Furlong said. When the boy said no, the man told him to get into the van, Furlong said.

The boy ran away from the man to Seeliger Elementary School, where he reported the incident. It was relayed to the Carson City Sheriff’s Office.

“He did exactly the right thing,” Furlong said.

The boy described the suspect as a while male in his mid-30s; with short, dark hair and sideburns; wearing a black ski-type jacket with red on both shoulders, baggy black or dark-blue pants and tennis shoes. The man was wearing dark sunglasses with large rims on the top, like what baseball players wear, the boy said.

The man was driving an older-model dark or navy blue minivan with a rounded front and back with a sliding door, the boy said. No stickers or marks were on the vehicle, and the wheels were spoke-type.

Superintendent Richard Stokes said the Carson City School District is working closely with the sheriff’s office and that school personnel are going to be extra vigilant, especially when students are outside for recess or lunch. All principals have been notified.

“It always gives us an opportunity to talk about school safety. Kids are very aware to consider that whole stranger-danger mentality,” Stokes said, adding that no one wants to frighten the children.

The incident highlights the importance of walking with a friend to school, he said.

Anyone with information is asked to call 774-887-2011 or Secret Witness at 775-322-4900.
