November 1, 2016
One man is dead following an officer-involved shooting in Carson City.
Law enforcement responded to the Roop Street Senator Apartments at 9:29 a.m. Tuesday for reports of a white male with a shotgun in the manager's office. Nevada Highway Patrol and Carson City Sheriff's Office responded to created a perimeter around the three-apartment office, giving verbal commands for the suspect to exit the building.
According to officials, the commands were ignored and a NHP trooper entered the building. It is unknown what occurred next, however, NHP Public Information Officer Trooper Duncan Dauber said the trooper engaged the suspect and continued to give commands that were ignored and the trooper shot the suspect.
"All law enforcement agencies are completely fluid and in a case like this we can't wait to go in," Dauber said, commenting on why NHP was the engaging agency. "The trooper was probably just the one closest to the door."
The man, who has not been identified, was killed. The trooper and everyone else were not injured.
The motive for the shooting is unknown and it has not been determined if the suspect lived in the apartment complex, Dauber said.
Dauber said they are unsure if the suspect fired any shots.
As of noon, the scene has been secured, however, the roads around the apartment have been blocked off for traffic.
Detours are set up for the barricaded off areas, which include 5th and Roop, King and Roop, Little and Roop and 5th and Pratt. The roads are not expected to reopen until this afternoon. Residents in the apartment building are able to return to their homes, they just need to check with officers on the perimeter.
Carson City Sheriff's Office, NHP and Nevada Department of Public Safety: Investigation Division were all on scene, and Douglas County Sheriff's Office is investigating as per protocol.
Authorities are conducting the preliminary investigation, taking photos of the scene and identifying the deceased. All parties involved are cooperating.
As with protocol, the officer will be placed on administrative leave.
The suspect is dead after officers responded to an active shooter situation at the Senator Apartments, 505 S. Roop St., in Carson City.
