4 boys players honored

Four Carson High boys basketball players were named to the all-Sierra League team by a vote of league coaches.

Cameron Price was one of seven first-team selections, while guard Kyle Steele was a second-team pick.

Kyle Denning and Dilyn Rooker were honorable mention selections.

Douglas also had four selections.

Center James Herrick was a first-team pick while Austin Evans and A.J. Pfaffenberger were second-team selections. Pat Johnson was named honorable mention.

Galena grabbed the top two honors. Zach Lessigner was named the league’s top player, while Brian Voyles was named the top coach after leading the Grizzlies to the league title.

Herrick was chosen to the all-regional team along with Damonte’s Kyle Daugherty, Manogue’s Remy Dillard, Lessigner, Kyle Mahaffey of Reno, Kenny Meyer of Spanish Springs, Jalil Walker of North Valleys and Jamel Ramos of Reed.

Reed’s Trae Wells was named the top player in the region, while Kyle Penney of Spanish Springs was named the top coach.

On the girls side, Carson was blanked in the voting process. Savannah Smith, the team’s top player, would have been first or second team had it not been for a season-ending knee injury.

Douglas had seven players honored after finishing second to Bishop Manogue.

Leona Mortimer and McKenna Kynett were first-team selections, while Katie McCullough was a second-team pick. Corryne Millett, Kassidy Freitas, Kelly Sonnemann and Jesse Jim were honorable mention selections.

Douglas coach Werner Christian was a well-deserved top coach winner.

Christian shared regional coaching honors with Reno’s Shane Foster and Spanish Springs’ Art Cardenas.

Mortimer and Kynett were on the all-region team.

Manogue’s Breezi Holt, Reno’s Morgan McGwire and Shalen Shaw, and Reed’s Tyler Sumpter were named the region’s top players.
