SPRING CREEK — The Spring Creek girls soccer team welcomed the top girls soccer squad in Northern I-A Friday, and dropped a 3-1 result to Fallon. Despite the loss, Spring Creek coach Kami Hernandez was happy with her team’s performance against the league leaders.
“I think we played a really good game,” Hernandez said. “They proved to themselves they know how they can play.”
The teams traded chances in an evenly-matched start, but it was the Lady Spartans who had the first dangerous look at a goal when Shawntel Andersen launched a direct free kick into the Fallon crossbar in the 12th minute. The ball deflected back into play, but no Spring Creek players were able to get to the loose ball quickly enough to have an attempt on the open net during the ensuing scramble.
The Lady Spartans earned two more first half free kicks, but Fallon created most of the pressure after Spring Creek came close.
The Greenwave broke through in the 23rd minute, when Fallon forward Maddie Alegre ran past the Spring Creek back line and fired a shot past goalkeeper Jasmin Giere from 15 yards out. Neither team had any more serious scoring chances during the half and the teams entered the break with Fallon up 1-0.
The Greenwave kept the pressure up in the second half, forcing Giere into several big saves. Her most difficult came 10 minutes into the second half, when she stopped a Fallon forward on a one-on-one.
Fallon’s sustained pressure paid off in the 69th minute, when Alegre collected her second tally on another breakaway. Giere got a piece of Alegre’s shot, but the momentum carried it over the line to put the Greenwave up 2-0.
Spring Creek took control of possession and offensive pressure after falling behind by two, but the Greenwave were able to add one more goal with Spring Creek pushing players forward, as Alegre completed her hat trick by finishing on another breakaway to make the score 3-0.
Spring Creek got a goal back seconds before the final whistle when Linsey Bessert pounced on a loose ball spilled by Fallon’s goalkeeper after a long free kick to bring the final score to 3-1.
Fallon plays at Elko at 1 p.m. Saturday.
Boys get past Spartans
The Fallon boys soccer team netted a 2-0 win over Spring Creek on Friday at the Edward Arciniega.
Fidel Enriquez scored twice as the Greenwave kept their playoff hopes alive. Enriquez’s first goal came off an assist from Corbin Waite and Enriquez drilled a shot past the Spring Creek goalkeeper.
His second goal, Enriquez weaved through three defenders, settled his own rebound and fired a shot into the back of the net.
Fallon hosts Elko at 11 a.m. Saturday.
