UPADTE: FPD investigating possible student, CCSD employee relationship

An investigation into an improper relationship between a Churchill County School District employee and a 17-year-old student has been turned over to the Fallon Police Department.

On Friday, FPD Cpt. Vern Ulrich said he has not discovered any evidence to support claims of criminal activity. The allegation, he said, was disclosed by a former significant other of the CCSD female employee last month.

Once CCSD became aware of the allegations, district officials notified police, Ulrich said. He said the names of the individuals involved would not be released because of the investigation and no evidence has been found to support the claim.

“The claims are unsubstantiated,” Ulrich added. “From a criminal stand point, there is nothing. We just can’t substantiate (the claim).”

When asked if charges could be levied against the significant other for false reporting, Ulrich said no evidence has been unearthed to prove a false a claim has been made.

He said numerous individuals including the employee and student have been interviewed, but those discussions did not reveal any wrongdoing.

CCSD interim Superintendent Bus Scharmann, meanwhile, released a statement Friday absolving the employee after an internal investigation was conducted.

“The internal investigation did not establish that there had been sexual relations between this employee and a student, although it did establish that policies had been violated,” Scharmann said. “Appropriate personnel actions have been taken. Additional procedures have been implemented with regard to this employee.”

Scharmann said allegations of the relationship surfaced recently, and the district took “immediate and decisive steps.”

It is against district policy and regulations for a CCSD employee and student to engage in a sexual relationship.

The District’s policies and practices are gender-neutral regarding allegations of sexual relations between employees and students.

Scharmann said the district reported the allegations to law enforcement, placed the employee on leave, ran its own investigation and notified and worked with the parents of the suspected victim and the student.

District officials also counseled the student and parents of the student, Scharmann said.
