Fallon grad competes in NBC World Series

One recently graduated college student is trying to extend his baseball career this week.

After playing for McMurry University (Abilene, Texas) the last two seasons, 2008 Fallon grad Charlie Hejny and the San Diego Force are competing in the 79th annual National Baseball Congress World Series at Lawrence-Dumont Stadium in Wichita, Kan. The Force opened the tournament with three-straight wins before falling to the only undefeated team (El Dorado, Kan.) left.

San Diego faced Cape Giradeu (M.O.) Thursday night in its second and final attempt to advance to Championship Week (Aug. 2-10).

San Diego knocked off Liberal (Kan.), 3-2, Ozark (M.O.), 8-6, and Cape Giradeu, 4-1, before falling to El Dorado, 6-2, which secured a spot in next week’s championship bracket.

Hejny was summoned out of the bullpen once in the tournament when he threw 2/3 inning against El Dorado on Wednesday. He allowed only one hit and struck out one.

At Division II McMurry, Hejny posted a 5.18 ERA out of the bullpen as he appeared in a team-high 15 games and was second in saves with three. He threw 24.1 innings and struck out 12 for the War Hawks.

Fallon 14s end all-star season

After being overwhelmed in the Pacific Southwest regional opener on Monday, the Fallon 14-year-old baseball all-star team continued to run into stiff competition.

Fallon lost to Hamilton (Ariz.), 24-0, on Monday followed by a 22-3 defeat to Westchester (So. Calif.) in pool competition in Surprise, Ariz.

Fallon, though, improved on the second day in Pool B, losing to Glendale/La Crescenta (So. Calif.), 13-7. Fallon ended pool play with a 10-0 loss to Hawaii on Wednesday. Hawaii and Westchester advanced from Pool B and Tri-Valley (No. Calif.) and Somerton (Ariz.) represented Pool A in the single-elimination portion of the tournament. The winner advances to the World Series later this month.
