PREP: Carson wrestlers third at Fernley
January 20, 2013
FERNLEY – Carson High’s wrestling team finished third at the Fernley tournament over the weekend.
Lowry won the event with 311 points, Spanish Springs was second at 256 and Carson was next at 183. Reno placed fourth at 153,
“We wrestled pretty well on Friday, but we didn’t have a ton of matches,” Carson coach Tim McCarthy said. “Third place is not bad, but I wish we were closer to second and I wish we could have given Lowry a run for its money.
“The semifinals really killed us. We had seven kids in and Kyle Sharp (120) was the only one to win.”
Sharp went 4-1, losing by pin in the finals to Eric Brooks.
“It was a close match and Kyle ended up getting stuck,” McCarthy said.
Sammy Mercado (113) was 6-1 en route to a third-place finish. Cole McCarthy, despite a fractured nose, went 5-1 to finish third at 132. He lost 4-2 in the semis. Jordan Luhrs (170) was 5-1 and also took third. Brady Rivera (182) was 5-1 and took third.
Nicholas Lani (138) was fourth with a 5-2 record and Brady O’Keefe (145) was fourth with a 4-2 record.
Colby Brown went 3-2 at 160, Javier Torres went 2-2 at 191 and Dominic Kinder went 2-2 at 126.
The news wasn’t so good for Nolan Shine. The tough, talented 152-pounder reached the semis, but injured his knee forcing him to default. He also had to default his wrestleback match and took sixth.
“That would be a big blow if we lost him.” McCarthy said. “He planted and it twisted. It was pretty swollen when he left.”
Lani was also injured. McCarthy thinks he may have a broken nose.
Carson wrestles at Douglas in its final Sierra League dual at 6 p.m. Wednesday. Carson has a 24-match win streak in league. On Thursday, Carson hosts High Desert power Spanish Springs on Thursday. Junior varsity matches will start at 5.
