The first batter of the game set the tone for the rest of the night during Friday’s Junior All-Star District 1 tournament at Governors Field.

Reno Continental’s Josh Menante hit a ground ball back to Carson pitcher Josh Buchan, Buchan fielded the ball and threw into the ground skipping the ball past first basemen Derek Schafer advancing Menante to second.

It was that kind of night as Carson lost 13-3. Carson was eliminated, while Continental plays Centennial at 7:30 p.m. today at Governors for the district championship. Continental must beat Centennial twice to advance.

After a wild pitch and single Menante gave Reno a 1-0 lead.

Buchan would get out of the inning and Carson would fight back to tie the game in the bottom half of the inning.

A walk by Derek Schafer, a double by Daniel Morrison and a single by Delsin Roberts scored Schafer and tied the game.

It would stay tied until the third inning when the bounces started to go Reno’s way.

A single, an infield single that could have resulted in an out, a bunt single that went between Buchan and Schafer on the right side of the infield and a hot-shot that was a potential double play ball went through the wickets giving Carson a 3-1 Reno lead.

Buchan showed some resilience after the defense let him down and got out of the inning leaving the bases loaded.

In the fourth inning, Reno took advantage of more Carson miscues. A lead off single, a passed ball, and error on a ball of the bat of Reno’s Josh Rolling chased Buchan with the score 4-1.

Terin Keller came in and got an out on a comebacker but Rolling caught Carson sleeping on the play as heads up base running landed him at third. He scored on an infield single by Myles King. King stole second and reached third on an error. He then scored on a ground out to make it 6-1.

Carson cut the lead to 6-3 in the bottom of the fourth when the locals took advantage of two walks and a hit-by-pitch.

Colby Zemp made Reno pay with a 2 RBI single.

Reno came back with three runs in the fifth for a 9-3 lead. Continental stretched the lead to the final tally in sixth inning with four more runs.
