A great effort by Mario Duarte carried the host Nogales to a 21-2 win over the Carson Intermediate All-Stars in an opening game of the Little League Western Regionals on Thursday in Nogales, Ariz.
Duarte racked up eight RBIs on four hits for Nogales. He hit a home in the first inning, tripled in the second, and singled in the third and fourth innings.
Twelve runs in the opening three innings allowed Nogales to take a 12-2 lead. A three-run home run by Duarte during the first and a walk by Gabriel Estrada, a sacrifice fly by Jorge Bojorquez, a two-run triple by Duarte, an RBI single by Paul Carreño, and a ground out by Aaron Solis in the second supplied the early offense for Nogales.
Landon Truesdale had a big game for Carson, accounting for both of Carson’s runs. His homer gave Carson a 1-0 lead in the first and Truesdale tripled and scored to pull Carson to within 9-2 in the third.
Bojorquez got it done on the rubber on the way to a win. He allowed two runs over three innings. Bojorquez struck out five, walked none and gave up four hits.
Joe Tonino, Jared Barnard and Kahle Good all added a hit for Carson.
