U-18 WildCats win South Tahoe tourney

The WildCats’ U-18 softball squad compiled a 4-0-1 record to win the South Tahoe ASA Tournament last weekend.

The local squad went 2-0-1 in Saturday pool play, and then came out to beat the Tahoe Smoke 14-2 in the semifinals and the Nevada Lightning, 8-1, in the championship game.

In the finals, Kindra Ryals tossed a 4-hitter and fanned four to shut down the Lightning. Makenzie Hospodka, Julia Gomez and Meghan Hospodka all made stellar defensive plays in taking away potential extra-base hits away from the Lightning.

In the finals, Kaitlyn Jimmy pitched a 3-hitter against the Tahoe Smoke. Everybody in the lineup collected at least one hit in the easy win.

Kelsie Callahan led the 48-hit weekend attack by going 7-for-12 with four runs. Makenzie Hospodka went 5-for-9 with three runs, while Meghan Hospodka went 5-for-13 with three runs. Valerie Quam went 4-for-10 with seven runs, Gomez went 5-for-11 and Bailey Henderson went 4-for-10 with three runs. Kylie McClellan finished 4-for-8, Ryals went 4-for-11 and Megan Goodale went 3-for-6.

Special events at CVGC

Carson Valley Golf Club is hosting two special events.

On Saturday, the local course is hosting a Nike Demo Day from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., and on July 23-24 and July 30-31 there is a junior summer camp slated at 1:30 and 2:30 p.m. The $80 fee includes instruction, time on the course, clubs, golf balls and a golf goodie bag. Each session last 50 minutes.

Clinics are suitable for kids between the ages of 5 and 17, and golfers will be grouped based on age and experience. For more information, call 265-3181.

• Dennis Patterson shot a net 63 to win the CVGC’s Red, White and Blue tee event on July 7. Mike Davis was second at 64 and Bob Pemberton was third at 69. In Flight B, Augie Martinez, Don Henderson and Gary Schreiber tied for first with 65s. In Flight C, John Carey won with a 60. Brent Holderman was second at 67 and Bill Centers was third at 68.

Maxwell wins at Empire

Roger Maxwell shot a net 59 to win Flight A at the recent Empire Ranch Senior Men’s Club event on July 3.

Henry Teague was second at 61, while Gary Dalen, John Lewis and Dan Power tied for third at 62.

Dino DiClanno won Flight B with a 59. Paul Lockwood and Dennis Justin tied for second at 61, and Tom Harlow was fourth at 62.

• The local course is offering several deals. The popular Ranch Card is back. The cost is $150, which includes four rounds free on a punch card, $25 rounds, including cart, April though October, $20 winter rounds, 10 percent off pro shop merchandise and a $5 coupon for every round played for the pro shop or restaurant. Lukens group wins T.C. event

John and Cheryl Lukens teamed with Glenn Tsuda and Curt Wilson to win the 4th of July 4-person Shamble at Thunder Canyon.

The foursome carded a 109 to finish five shots ahead of Bob and Monica Pike and Mike and Betty McGee. Third went to Charlie and Kathy Cockerill and Dave and Brooke Nielsen at 115. Kathy Cockerill and Rob Stoddard won closest-to-the-hole honors.

• The Thunder Canyon held a Beat the General Manager (Bill Gibson) event on July 5th. Gibson shot a 69.

Lynn Greenman and Cheryl Lukens netted a 55, while Kathy Cockerill and Judy Lynn Charles shot a 65. Mary Anderson missed a hole-in-one by one-half inch on No.2.

Bob Bittman and Jeff Gussow shot a 62, while John Anderson and Leland Sullivan were at 64 as were Burt Clements and Mike Bennert. Fran Menante was closest to the pin on No. 2 at 5-feet 4 inches.

Alcalay group wins at Silver Oak

Steve Alcalay, Tona Smith and Robert Vannort shot a 120 to win the 4-man Cha Cha Cha on July 2.

Tom Petralia, Mel Younker, Lee Gilmore and Glenn Stegeman were second at 121, while Vern Payette, Frank Turek, Tom Rackerby and Rion Causey were third at 122.
