Community sports: Running Wild races to grass v-ball crown

Running Wild beat the CV Crushers, 21-15 and 21-8, to win the coed championship grass volleyball event during Carson Valley Days last weekend.

Members of the team were area volleyball stars Talyn Jackson and Jaycie Roberts. Nick Lonnegren and Chris Downs were the male members of the winning team.

The oldest, and most experienced team the Aces, composed of newly-minted freshmen, dominated and won the junior division with a 4-0 record as was expected. Members of the team were Meika Cole, Amanda Hone, Olivia Johnson, Grace McKay, Rachael Hollar and Isabella Tomassi.

In the women's division, Nevada Photo Source knocked off Finish Her, 22-20 and 21-12, in the championship match.

Cat and Erin Allison, Denise Yamada, Katy Marsh and Shawnee Keller were members of the team.

Off-season workouts start for cross country

Runners interested in preparing for the fall cross country season are welcome to attend conditioning starting tonight at 6:30 at Carson Middle School.

The group meets Mondays at the Spooner Maintenance Station, Wednesdays at Carson Middle School and Fridays at the south end of Edmonds/Pete Livermore Sports Complex. The group has two planned adventure hike and runs planned at Yosemite and Marlette Lake.

Camp triumphs at Silver Oak

Wes Camp shot a net 65 to win Flight 1 at Silver Oak Men's Club Monthly Masters event. Camp edged Eric Hoyle by one shot, and Ben Gelbaum, Jim Sapien and Vern Payette by two.

Joe Paden and Tyler Roberts won Flight 2 with net 66s, one shot ahead of Bill Whitstone and Manny Lopez.

Dennis Joseph was closest to the hole on No. 2.

Ojeda group wins at Empire Ranch

Rene Ojeda, Bill Hammonds and Bill Bowers shot a net 124 to win the Empire Ranch Senior Men's event on June 6. The format was yellow ball in which one golfer played the yellow ball and the lowest net score from the other two or three players comprised the score for the hole.

John Masiello, Nick Paul, Jim Green and John Lewis shot 125 and Steve Scarfe, Lee Ghiglieri, Jim Norton and Tom Wickham shot 129. Pat and Fred Coons, Rich Torok and Peter Yougdahl won the lost yellow ball flight with a 124.

Torok, Donnie Curd, Pat Coons and Dennis Justin won closest to the hole.

The Senior Men's Club has an away game today, and golfers can play the course all day for $30, which includes a cart. For more information, call 885-2100. You also get a $5 coupon to use in the restaurant.

Gussow wins at Thunder Canyon

Jeff Gussow shot a net 69 to win Thunder Canyon's Men's Day event on June 10.

Gussow edged Steve McKnight by two shots, and Tom Brennan, Max Gundlach, Dave Westfall and Bruce Miller by three shots. Charles Cockerill was seventh with a 73.

Cheryl Burke and Patricia Hiatt won low gross and low net, respectively, at Thunder Canyon's Ladies Day event on June 10. Burke shot a gross 80 and Hiatt finished with a 69. Donna Schellin was second low net with a 72, while Carol Boice and Jackie Cheney were next at 73. Stephanie Walton took fifth with a 75 net.

Paden wins low gross at Dayton

Terri Paden shot 96/61 to win Flight 1 low gross at Dayton Valley. The format was tee to green, meaning putts didn't count. Kathy Ellis won Flight 1 low net with a 100/65.

Cathy Kulm and Nancy Mortensen tied for low gross in Flight 2 with 109s. Kulm had a 109/72 and Mortensen had a 109/76. Shirley Mercer won low net with a 114/76. Gerry Doyle won low gross in Flight 3 with a 119/88.

Dayton Valley knocked off the Wolf Run women's group in a 36-hole tournament played on May 24 and 31.

The first session for the Dayton Valley junior golf camp is set for today through Friday from 2 to 4:30 p.m. The cost is $80 per session or $40 per day. The camp is open to golfers between 5 and 17 years old, and is under the direction of Josh Ralph, assistant golf pro. For more information, call 246-7888 ext. 1.

Patterson grabs win at Carson Valley

Dennis Patterson shot a net 69 to win Flight A at the recent Carson Valley Men's Club event. Marc Menezes was second with a 71 and Fred Coons was third at 72.

Jim Arens won Flight B with a 65, while Matt Budjako beat Bruce Sanford in a tiebreaker for second place. Both shot 68s. John Watson won Flight C with a 68, three clear of John Guidicatti and Larry Lockwood, Augie Martinez and Dan Essary were closest to the hole winners.
