Local sports roundup: Carson City soccer team takes second

The Pumas Elite U-15 squad from the Carson Futbol Club finished second at last weekend's Modesto Ajax Spring Tournament.

The local squad played in an older age bracket, compiling a 2-1-1 record. The locals lost to San Francisco Academy's No. 1 team in the finals.

Carson tied Atletico Santa Rosa, 2-2, and then won two straight games to reach the finals.

Silver State gymnasts excel

The Silver State Gymnastics Academy tuned up for this weekend's state meet by performing at the 2015 Flower Power in Ranco Cordova.

The Level 3 squad won the top team award based on its performances in the younger, middle and older divisions.

Bella Planela was first on vault and second on bars and beam en route to the all-around title. Danica Studley won beam and was second on vault to win second place all-around.

Alexis Gardner was third on beam and vault.

Eliana Hollar was first on beam and floor, second on vault and third on bars to win the all-around in the middle division. In the older division, Nicole Hawkins scored a 38.725 which was the second-highest score of the entire meet. She won the vault, beam and floor, and was second on bars. Eviana McGowan was second on floor and third on beam, bars and vault. Jessica Stine was second on vault.

Madison Adams was second on vault at level 6 and Lily Reid won beam and floor en route to winning second place in all-around in Level 7.

Free basketball clinic

The Tarkanian Basketball Academy will hold a free basketball clinic Saturday at 11:30 a.m. at Morse Burley Gym.

The clinic is part of a tour of the entire state, and the clinic is open to boys and girls between the ages of 6 and 18.

Plemel, Nichols tie with 67s

Former Stanford University pitcher Lee Plemel shot a gross 72 and a net 67, and Russell Nichols shot a net 67 to tie for the A flight title at the Silver Oak Men's Club tournament March 22.

Dan Wilson and Josh Nelson were second with 69s, and Milo Beauchman was fifth with a 70.

Freeman Johnson won B flight with a net 67, two shots better than Gary Yoakum. Jim Dawers and Manny Lopez tied for third with 71s.

Dennis Prutch and Tyler Roberts tied for fifth with 72.
