Carson High senior, community freshen up C Hill

About 35 Carson City residents and students joined Carson High School senior Michael Service on Oct. 24 on his venture to clean up the city’s C Hill, and now he’s just three merit badges away from his Eagle Scout rank.

“Everything was done pretty quickly,” Service said on Wednesday. “Me and my father and two friends stayed up there another three hours.”

Service said local members from The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, fellow members from Troop 341 and a few doctors from his mother’s office joined in the effort to move rocks and pull weeds to clean up the hill.

Service said he assisted in making sure everyone was safe in the process.

“Not a lot of people were volunteering to do the C, and I was thinking, ‘Hey, why not do the C?’ since it’s right before Nevada Day and nobody else is making a volunteering group to try to fix it themselves,” he said. “I thought I might as well do it since nobody else will.”

As a Boy Scout, he said he’s learned survival and life skills he might not have picked up otherwise.

“It really did help and really did do a lot for me,” he said of the program.

Service said once he graduates, he plans to attend Western Nevada College for two years and earn degrees in graphic design and animation and in cybersecurity.

He said he was happy with the outcome of the project.

“It feels nice,” he said. “Everyone’s happy and telling me how good it looks being nice being able to help the community.”
