What better way to celebrate Nevada’s birthday than with a big band blowout?

Under the direction of Richard Doede, Capital City Community Band is bringing back its free Nevada Day concert from 2 to 3 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 29.

The concert, “Tribute to Nevada’s Birthday,” will be following the parade, weather permitting, at the Amphitheater in the Legislative Mall.

The band will perform a variety of music including the “American Patrol” created by Glenn Miller when he served as the United States Military’s Musical Director during World War II.

Also on the program are “Somewhere” by Leonard Bernstein from West Side Story; “Salute to Bob Hope,” the No. 1 entertainer the world over during World War II, which features a medley of songs — “Road to Morocco,” “Moonlight Becomes You,” “Buttons & Bows,” “Two Sleepy People” and “Thanks for the Memories;” “American Originals,” a medley of “Yankee Doodle Boy,” “Alexander’s Ragtime Band,” “Swanee River” and “You’re a Grand Old Flag” and “Stars and Stripes Forever” by John Philip Sousa, declared the official march by the United States Congress.

The concert is free and open to the public. Parents are encouraged to bring their children to enjoy this concert. Bring a lawn chair or blanket on which to sit.

The Nevada Day performance is one of several performances the ensemble puts on annually.

Founded by Doede in 1978, the band works to provide a performance and music education venue for adults who enjoy making music and to provide Carson City and the surrounding communities with free musical entertainment.

All of the members donate their time and talent, including the director. The Carson City School District donates rehearsal space.

The band has represented Nevada and the U.S. at Expo 88 in Brisbane, Australia in 1988 and has performed in the Community Band Festival in Davos, Switzerland in 1995.

It relies on donations from individuals and businesses to purchase music and pay for concert venues.
