The historic town of Genoa is paying tribute to one of music’s most flamboyant superstars in an event to benefit Family Support Council.

The inaugural It Takes a Village Music Festival will highlight music of Elton John and Motown from 2 to 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 3 in the stockade at Mormon Station State Historic Park.

The festival, which falls on Labor Day weekend, offers two stages of live entertainment.

Beginning on the Village Stage will be award winning Dougie L. for the National Sinatra competition singing the Great American Song Book.

Bringing funk and rhythm and blues from the Motown era is Gruve Nation.

Rocket Man, an exact re-enactment of an early Elton John performance, is taking over the grand stage at 5:15 p.m.

The performance, whose star is Rus Anderson as Elton John, is going to feature exact-replica costumes and others actually worn by John. The music will feature faster tempos and various flashy grand pianos.

If concert goers are hungry, they can buy sweet and spicy barbecue rib dishes and barbecued beef kabobs from Genoa Station Grill. Genoa Bar will be hosting a beer, wine and rum runner bar.

Also, attendees are invited to dress as their favorite icon of the 1970s, such as Elvis and enter the Celebrity Costume Contest, whose winner gets $250.

VIP seating is $38 and general admission tickets are $28. Audience members are invited to bring their own lawn chair, but coolers aren’t permitted.

The Greater Genoa Business Association and several local sponsors are giving half of the ticket sales to Family Support Council, a nonprofit who provides support and emergency shelter to victims of domestic and sexual violence.
