The Popcorn Stand: With or with tuba, Air Force band will be a treat

As maybe a few of you know who have chosen to read this Popcorn Stand in various versions, I love bands. I love bands so much I wished they would bring them back for the Super Bowl halftime show.

I know the difference between a tuba and a Sousaphone which leads me to this joke that only people who played in the band would get. Arnold Schwarzenegger was playing the Sousaphone in the marching band when a fan yelled out, “hey, nice tuba,” to which Schwarzenagger replied, “it’s not a tuba” (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6ucfgdFrlho). If you actually hear me telling that joke in Schwarzenegger’s thick accent, it might be a little funnier.

So I know how fortunate we are to have a third trip to Carson City in a little over a year of some of the finest military musicians — some of the finest musicians period for that matter. The United States Air Force Band of the Golden West will make its second trip to Carson City in as many summers. We also were fortunate enough to have the United States Air Force Band come to Carson City in early 2015.

I can tell you how truly historic that trip to Carson City was for the U.S. Air Force Band to come here. The U.S. Air Force Band only goes to communities who have some pull and appreciate music. I was fortunate enough to see the U.S. Air Force Band in concert once and it was one of the biggest thrills of my life. As a matter of fact I think the U.S. Air Force Band should perform during the Super Bowl halftime show.

Anyway, the U.S. Air Force Band of the Golden West will be bringing its full concert band to the Bob Boldrick Theater at the Carson City Community Center at 7 p.m. Aug. 16. Not Aug. 17 as our headline stated in Wednesday’s Appeal. As the executive assistant editor of the Sierra Nevada Media Group, Nevada Appeal Branch, Newsroom Division, I have no idea how that headline got into print. Must have been the gremlins.

The U.S. Air Force Band of the Golden West is performing in conjunction with the Carson City Jazz and Beyond Carson City Music Festival that begins on Aug. 5.

The Carson City Chamber of Commerce has been coordinating the U.S. Air Force Band of the Golden West’s concert in conjunction with the Bob Boldrick Theater. The concert is free, and tickets are available at the Chamber of Commerce. Tickets are available on a first-come, first-served basis. No more than four tickets per household will be distributed. They are going fast.

The Chamber office is at 1900 S. Carson St. on the grounds of the Nevada State Railroad Museum. It’s open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. weekdays.
