Carson water skier heads for nationals

Carson City's Kyle Kaifesh has qualified for the national water ski championships.


The 18-year-old water skier, who recently graduated from Carson High, will compete in distance jumping and slalom at the national championships to be held Aug. 14-18 in Bakersfield, Calif. Kaifesh will be competing in the Men's 1 division for ages 18 to 25.


Kaifesh was able to qualify in jumping by meeting the distance standard of 135 feet. Kaifesh recently competed in the Western Regionals in Washington where he placed ninth.


The top five at the regionals qualifed for the national event.


Kaifesh qualified for the nationals in the slalom at another event where he was able to navigate the required number of buoys while his boat was going 36 miles per hour.


Kaifesh has been water skiing for eight years and this will be his third trip to the nationals. He was also a member of the Western Regional Junior Water Ski team.


"I've been doing it for so long," Kaifesh said. "I like being in the water. It's exhilarating."
