Big Nevada hospitals show profits, some smaller ones lose money

Carson-Tahoe Hospital was not among the several mid-size and small hospitals that lost money last year.

The report Thursday from the state Health Care Financial Analysis Unit shows Carson-Tahoe Hospital posted a $4.3 million net profit in 1999.

The ''Big Six'' hospitals in Reno and Las Vegas had a combined $56.9 million profit in 1999. Small urban hospitals made a combined $2.5 million, and rural hospitals had an overall profit of $1.2 million.

Combining those three figures produces a statewide net operating revenue total of $60.6 million. That's up 10 percent from about $50 million statewide in 1998.

The most profitable hospital in the state last year was Sunrise Hospital and Medical Center in Las Vegas, accounting for $29.8 million of the total for ''Big Six'' hospitals.

Next in line was Valley Hospital Medical Center in Las Vegas at $8.5 million; followed by Saint Mary's Regional Medical Center in Reno, with $7.1 million in net income; and University Medical Center in Las Vegas with $6.4 million in net income.

Washoe Medical Center in Reno reported $4.5 million in net income; followed by Desert Springs Hospital in southern Nevada with $542,416.

The net income or loss for Nevada's small urban and rural hospitals includes:

-SOUTHERN NEVADA: $6.7 million net for Lake Mead Hospital; $617,148 net for Boulder City Hospital; a $10.2 million net loss for St. Rose Dominican Hospital; a $2 million net loss for MountainView Hospital; and a net gain of $718,919 for Summerlin Hospital.

-NORTHERN NEVADA: $4.3 million net for Carson-Tahoe Hospital; $2.8 million net for Northern Nevada Medical Center; and a loss of $466,337 for Incline Village Health Center.

-RURAL: Net loss of $1.5 million for Battle Mountain General; $2.6 million net for Churchill Community Hospital; $2 million net for Elko General; a $137,773 net for Grover C. Dils Medical Center; a $343,333 net for Humboldt General; a $367,455 net loss for Mt. Grant General; a $1.6 million loss for Nye Regional Medical Center; a $928,359 loss for Pershing General, a $283,124 net for South Lyon Medical Center, and a $785,663 net for William B. Ririe Hospital in Ely.
