Fishing slow at Walker Lake

LAKE ALMANOR: No report.

LAKE ALPINE: No report.

BLUE LAKES (UPPER AND LOWER): No report.

BOCA RESERVOIR: No report.

CAPLES LAKE: Mostly frozen. Some open water near the dam. Do not go out onto the ice. It is still too thin. Dangerous.

DAVIS LAKE: No report.

EAGLE LAKE: No report.

FRENCHMAN RESERVOIR: Wiggin's Trading Post at Chilcoot checked in with this report, "The nights and early mornings have been cold and frosty. No ice to speak of yet forming on the lake and all areas are still accessible. Not many fishermen this past week. Those who did go were catching fish on various colors of Power Bait or worms. Shore fishing has been good at the dam. The north end is the best choice for the fly fishermen."

INDIAN CREEK RESERVOIR: Dave Kirby of the Woodfords Station said, "Indian Creek still has open water. Fishing continues to be fair. Catching some nice rainbows. A 2.5 pound rainbow was caught over the weekend. Morning temperatures are very cool."

Summit Lake above Indian Creek Reservoir: No report.

KENNEY RESERVOIR: No report.

LAHONTAN RESERVOIR: No report.

PYRAMID LAKE: Lawrence Quadrio at the Gilly's Sporting Goods Store in Sparks reported, "Fishing has improved as far as size. The fish have moved into the shallower water and the fishermen are catching cutthroat in the 6-10 pound class. Trolling success has improved. The usual lures and flies are working well at the usual locations."

RED LAKE: Mostly frozen. Some open water near the dam. Do not go out onto the ice. It is still too thin. Dangerous.

SACRAMENTO RIVER: According to Kirk Portocarrero of Redding. Calif., "In the Anderson-Balls Ferry area, the salmon are still few. On a good day, we're producing a fish per rod. River is at 5,500 C.F.S. Salmon are ranging in size from 15 to 20 pounds. An occasional one over 30 pounds. Most of the salmon are bright chrome in color. Any rain will help push more bright fish up the river. Boaters are using Flatfish lures wrapped with sardines."

SILVER LAKE: Some open water. Do not go out onto the ice. It is still too thin. Dangerous.

SHASTA LAKE: No report.

STAMPEDE RESERVOIR: No report.

LAKE TAHOE - North Shore: Mickey Daniels of Mickey's Big Mack Charters reported, "I'll be gone on Monday for a week to a family reunion in Florida. Last weekend we were catching Mackinaw trout, up to 8 pounds, with an occasional rainbow. We have been catching easy limits and tagging and releasing the smaller ones. We've been trolling 250-550 feet deep in the area in front of Carnelian Bay and King's Beach. We are using Herring Dodger flasher blades with either live minnows or pearl Apex lures."

LAKE TAHOE - SOUTH SHORE: Jack Martin of the Sportsmen's Sporting Goods Store at South Lake Tahoe said, "We just got back from fishing in Mexico late Friday night. We do not have any reports for South Lake Tahoe. While in Mexico, one of our boats, on one day, caught and released 3 Marlin and 2 Sailfish. We have some great pictures."

WALKER LAKE: Bob Tompkins of the Walker Lake Guide Services said, "Fishing is still slow. A number of fishermen reported getting "skunked" on Friday. In the last two weeks, we've had one fish with a Tui Chub in it. The rest of the cutthroats have been stuffed with fresh water shrimp. In three days last week (Wed-Fri), we caught a total of 15 fish. Two of them were 5-pounders, two were 4-pounders and the rest were "dinks." The best success is with either Chartreuse/red dot or Chartreuse/black dot, No 3 TOR-P-DO lures. The best area has been between Sportsmen's Beach and the Cliffs, anywhere from the surface down to about 15 feet."

WALKER RIVERS (EAST-WEST-LITTLE):

East Walker River (Nev.): Very low and crystal clear.

Bob Tompkins of the Walker Lake Guide Services reported, "The "Elbow" area continues to produce rainbows and an occasional German brown on either Panther-Martin or Roostertail lures or with Power Eggs or nightcrawlers."

West Walker River (Nev.): No report.

WEBER RESERVOIR: Bob Tompkins of the Walker Lake Guide Services reported, "Access to the reservoir is open. Check on current fishing conditions and restrictions at the Schurz Smoke Shop on U.S. 95."

WILDHORSE RESERVOIR: Steve of the Wildhorse Resort said, "The whole reservoir is frozen over now. It is still not safe to walk on but there were a couple of fishermen fishing through the ice at Penrod, south of the State Park. Our temperature is down to zero every night and we have about 3-4 inches of snow on the ground."
