DAYTON - The recent explosion at a nitrogen trifluoride facility is scheduled for discussion at Wednesday's Central Lyon County Fire District Board meeting.

The item was placed on the agenda at the request of board member Chuck Ayres.

District Fire Chief Bill Driscoll is out of town and will not be at the meeting. Acting Chief Mark Darragh said the investigation into the incident is still open and he would be making no comment until it is concluded.

The July 30 explosion at Advanced Specialty Gasses removed the metal roof panels from a section of the building isolated by concrete walls from the rest of the facility. According to ASG President Michael Koonce, nitrogen triflouride exploded in the distillation column during the distillation process.

He said hydrogen fluoride is not used in this process and was not involved.

Koonce said the federal government considers nitrogen trifluoride to be a non-flammable gas. Hydrogen fluoride can cause severe respiratory damage.

The Central Lyon County Fire District Board meets at Sutro Station, 231 Coral Drive, Dayton, beginning at 7 p.m. Call 246-6209.
