LOS ANGELES - Flames scorched 10 acres of brush Friday in the boulder-strewn hills of the west San Fernando Valley before firefighters working in 106 degree heat encircled the blaze.

The fire began shortly after 5 p.m. above Chatsworth, briefly threatening some homes and stables. Four helicopters bombarded flames with water and retardant and firefighters contained the blaze, said Fire Department spokesman Jim Wells.

Nearly 200 firefighters and ground crews were dispatched to the area.

The cause was not immediately determined.
