Letter: Local issues just as important as national

It is that time again, time to vote. I try to vote for the one I think is best qualified for that office. I guess most people do that too. I am fearful that the turnout will be low because of the mediocrity of the national campaign. People forget how important local races are, school bonds, getting the potholes fixed, educational excellence.

I have talked with Assemblywoman Bonnie Parnell several times and she has some very good ideas, especially on education. I think that is because she is a teacher. I would like to see some of her ideas come to fruition. She is a smart lady and not just on school school things, but on other things too.

Let's face it, sound bites are great, but what I think we need is someone with good old down-home common sense. I think Bonnie Parnell has that. We have to remember that local issues are just as important as national ones. Some may vote for Al Gore and some may not, but then he doesn't go to our schools, and he doesn't drive on our roads. The moral of the story is, if we don't vote, then what kind of nation are we? And if we don;t support the candidates we think are best, then how will our voices be heard on those issues most important to us? And those candidate signs, let's see more of them out there. It's just a short time.
