Letter: Owners should feel responsible for dog

I am writing this for several reasons. As I was traveling on Highway 395 just south of Lahontan Fish Hatchery south of Gardnerville on Saturday, July 15, at approximately 10:45 a.m. I witnessed a terrible accident between a light colored pickup and a beautiful young white and apricot dog.

This accident should not have happened. It happened because the owner of this dog allowed it to wander on a busy highway without a leash. I hope the driver of the pickup does not feel guilty about hitting the dog. He did the only thing possible. Had he veered to the left, he would have hit another truck head on. And had he veered to the right, he would have hit two people walking with the dog. The young dog got frightened by nearby livestock and ran out into traffic.

Why don't people take more responsibility for their animals? I cannot get the picture of this dog getting hit out of my mind. It made me sick to see the dog lying there so lifeless. I hope the owners live with this the rest of their lives. I really doubt they will, or they would not have allowed it to happen in the first place.

If writing this helps save a few dogs from the same fate, then I have not written this in vain.
