Mineral conference at UNR begins July 20

"Topic in Education: Science: Minerals in Society Annual Conference 2000" (CI 506R) will be offered by the University of Nevada, Reno in July.

The primary goal of this course is to familiarize teachers with Nevada's minerals industry and the role minerals play in society. Areas covered include technological and environmental changes occurring in the industry, geology, chemistry and the economics of this industry basic to the state's economy. Due to the unique location of this year's workshop, there will be an emphasis on the role of mining in the history and development of the state.

The course will be held July 20 and 21 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Western Nevada Community College, 2201 W. College Parkway in Carson City. There is an optional field trip on July 22 from 8 a.m.-5 p.m.

The course fee is $50 and includes one graduate credit. Participants must have a bachelor's degree to enroll. The instructor is Steve Scott, M.S., a high school teacher in Las Vegas.
