Obituary: Dr. James S. Eley

Dr. James S. Eley, 84, a Cave Rock Estates, Lake Tahoe resident, died July 28, 2000. He was born March 25, 1916, in Lima, Ohio to Sherman and Hazel Kephart Eley.

After graduating from Miami University in 1938, he received a Doctor of Medicine from Ohio State University in 1942. He enlisted in the U.S. Army during World War II and served as Post Surgeon at Camp Molgrie, N.C.

He practiced medicine in Eureka, Calif., retiring in 1975 . He then joined various cruise ship lines as ship's surgeon and was able to travel extensively.

He had a great love of the outdoors and enjoyed hunting and fishing, especially deep-sea fishing. He built his own boat, the BEME. He owned and lived on a ranch in Eureka where he raised cattle.

He was a 50-year member of the American Medical Association, a 50-year member of the Shriners, a member of Post 212, American Legion, in Eureka, the Tahoe Amateur Radio Association the board of Saint Josephs Hospital in Eureka and a past president of the Ingomar Club.

Memorial contributions may be made in his name to The Shriner Children's Hospital, Sacramento, Calif. or the Ohio Masonic Home (for the aged) in Springfield, Ohio.

A private service will be held in Eureka.

Walton's Chapel of the Valley, Crematory and Cemetery is in charge of arrangements.

He was preceded in death by brother Kenneth and sister Doris.

Among his survivors are his wife of 33 years, Lois Thein; daughters and husbands Mary and Charles Looman of Carson City, Elizabeth and Robert Muyres of Eureka; Barbara and Paul Funk of Wasco, Calif.; son and wife Robert and wife Jeannie Kauffman of Bayside, Calif. and five grandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be made to The Shriner Children's Hospital in Sacramento, Calif. or The Ohio Masonic Home (for the aged) in Springfield, Ohio.

A private service will be held in Eureka.
