Obituary: John Barber

There will be a private graveside ceremony for John Barber, 84, a lifelong Schurz resident. Mr. Barber died Nov. 16, 2000.

Born into the TeMoak band of the Western Shoshone Tribe in Eureka to Louie Barber Gelota and Ida Blackeye Best on Nov. 28, 1915, he was a 1937 graduate of the Stewart Indian School. A certified forester, he worked for the U.S. Indian Service for 30 years. He was an electrician by trade.

Mr. Barber served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He was awarded the American Defense Service medal, the Asiatic Pacific Service Medal, the European African Middle Eastern Service Medal and the good conduct medal.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Marie Amelia Silas Barber in 1991.

He is survived by many nieces and nephews.

He will be cremated by Walton's Sierra Crematory in Carson City. Walton's Chapel of the Valley is in charge of arrangements.
