Gardnerville firefighters set food drive in November

Staff reports

The Gardnerville Volunteer Fire Department will hold its first food drive next week.

Members decided to give a helping hand to the Carson Valley Community Food Closet when they found out that going into this holiday season supplies were low, said organizer Shannon Brecik. They are asking the community to donate non-perishable food items.

"Although the GVFD will be focusing its sights on those who live in town, everyone in Douglas County is encouraged to donate since the food closet serves the whole county," Brecik said.

Members of the GVFD will be on the streets this week, passing out fliers. Then, beginning Wednesday, they will be collecting all donations.

Pickup times are Wednesday, Kingslane and Aspen MHP, 5-8 p.m.; Thursday, residences next to Lampe Park, on Douglas Avenue, High School Street, Hussman and surrounding streets; Nov. 10, residences in Minden on County Road, Mono, 1st to 10th and surrounding streets, noon to 8 p.m.; Nov. 11, Winhaven, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.; and Nov. 12, Chichester Estates, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

All residents planning to donate are asked to place their donations in a grocery bag and leave on their porches.

These following drop-off locations are available: R&T Cleaners (on Lampe Lane across from Raley's), Nov. 8-12, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.; GVFD (at 1255 Douglas Ave.), Nov. 8-13, 4 to 7 p.m.; and the food closet (on Waterloo Lane across from Lampe Park), Monday through Friday, 1 to 4 p.m.

"The members of the GVFD would just like to say thanks to all those who donate," Brecik said.

For information or to make sure donations are picked up, call the GVFD at 782-2003 and leave a message.
