Silver Springs fire contained at one room

SILVER SPRINGS - A fire at a feed plant in Silver Springs caused approximately $3,000 to $4,500 damage, a fire investigator said Tuesday.

An oil leak in a 550-degree heat exchanger is suspected to have started the one-room fire, said Fire Prevention Specialist Mary Ellen Holly. Vaquero Food Supplements, at 1700 Highway 50 East, was not severely damaged.

"Nothing structural was effected except for maybe a beam," Holly said.

The fire was reported at 4:36 p.m. Monday. Firefighters from Central Lyon Fire District battled the blaze for two hours.

The company produces molasses-based nutritional supplements for cattle. The solid bars are placed in grazing fields and used like salt licks.
