A cigarette discarded in an office waste basket ignited Saturday night at the Carson City Nugget causing minor damage and a lot of smoke.

The small blaze, extinguished by about 11:50 p.m, burned nearby curtains and left some smoke damage in an office area just off the buffet.

According to batallion chief Richard Scrzanowski, at 11:30 p.m. three fire engines, a squad car and ambulance responded the small blaze, which burned nearby curtains and left some smoke damage in an office area just off the buffet.

"We didn't have to evacuate the building because there aren't many patrons there at that time. We had control of the smoke very quickly, and it never entered the casino portion of the building," he said, noting that the fire was located in an employee/office area alongside kitchen not normally accessible to the public. The buffet was closed at the time.
