Events in downtown Carson City supported by redevelopment money will now have to vie for funding via an application process.
In the past, anyone holding a downtown special event could approach the Carson City Redevelopment Authority and its citizen committee throughout the year for funding. Events range from the Farmers' Market and the Silver Dollar Car Classic to this summer's Tuesday's @ Third.
Robin Williamson, Redevelopment Authority chairwoman, said the authority will now have "a formal budget for what we want to spend."
"People can't just cruise in and ask for money," Williamson said. "We have to have some way of evaluating how we spend the money."
Williamson also said she wants to see events started with redevelopment funds become self-sufficient.
"After a while, events should run on their own legs," she said. "This should be seen as starter money."
Redevelopment Director Rob Joiner said the redevelopment citizen's committee will begin reviewing applications for about $50,000 in special events funding in January.
Applications for funding for events fiscal year 2001-2002 will be available Monday at City Hall, 201 N. Carson St. or the Community Development Department, 2621 Northgate Lane. Call Joiner at 887-2188 ext. 1002 for information.
