The Board of Examiners Tuesday approved a $46,500 payment to the family of an inmate who died at the prison infirmary.

Timothy Arquilla, 34, died of peritonitis - a severe internal infection - while in the infirmary at Northern Nevada Correctional Center. According to the state investigation of the incident, the cause of death was the medical staff's failure to respond to the man's medical complaints.

As a result of a ruptured diaphragm, Arquilla's stomach and intestines were forced up into his chest where they became developed gangrene.

Arquilla was serving 1-2 years for felony DUI.
