The University of Nevada, Reno renamed the Engineering Laboratory Center after U.S. Sen. Harry Reid in a ceremony Friday morning.

Reid is credited for arranging more than $8 million in federal funding for the College of Engineering.

"Sen. Reid has been a tremendous help to the university in securing for us tens of millions of dollars for research, equipment and other projects," UNR President Joe Crowley said. "We are pleased to honor him in this fashion. He is a true friend of higher education."

Reid was instrumental in securing $8.25 million in directed federal funding to purchase two 50-ton shake tables, which are housed in the James E. Rogers and Louis Wiener Jr. Large-Scale Structures Laboratory within the Center for Civil Engineering Earthquake Research. Through Reid's efforts a third shake table will be added in the near future.
