MINDEN - A community-based veterans' outpatient clinic will be established in Douglas County.

Sen. Richard Bryan, D-Nev., and Rep. Jim Gibbons Gibbons, R-Nev., said the Department of Veterans Affairs has received clearance to establish the facility, which is expected to serve approximately 1,000 patients a year.

The clinic will provide access for veterans living within a 30-mile radius.

The focus will be on primary care and general medical services with the option of referring any patients to the VA Medical Center in Reno, according to Dr. Robert Wiebe, Director of VA Sierra Pacific Network.

Other than the medical center in Reno, there currently are no community-based veterans outpatient clinics in Northern Nevada. Southern Nevada has eight medical facilities to treat veterans.
