A recently vacated gas station and garage on North Carson Street is being spiffed up by ARCO as the oil company searches for a new franchisee, a company spokesman said Thursday.

But ARCO will reopen and operate the former Borda's ARCO itself if a tenant ISN'T signed fairly soon, said Paul Langland, manager of public affairs for ARCO Products.

The station at the corner of Carson and Bath streets is being re-roofed and other repairs are being made inside and out, Langland said, so a new operator would be able to move right in.

The company wants the station to continue to offer mechanical services, he said. The other ARCO-brand stations in the Carson City area are Winners Corner franchises featuring convenience stores.

The proposed merger of ARCO with BP Amoco should have no effect on the company operations in Nevada, Langland said. He said the ARCO brand will continue to be used and the company will continue normal operations during any transition.

Dana and Susan Borda operated the station for 28 years. They did not renew their lease due Dec. 1 and have built a repair shop, Dana Borda's Automotive, at 1646 Hot Springs Road.
