Carson's Nelson stars at Pac-10 swims

A hairline fracture in his foot did nothing to slow Carson City's Bryan Nelson at the Pac-10 Conference Swimming and Diving Championships held March 2-4 in Federal Way, Wash.

Nelson, a senior at the University of Washington, trained through the injury he sustained two months ago and went on to place fifth in the men's 1,650-yard freestyle on the final day of the Pac-10 meet held at the King County Aquatic Center. Nelson's time of 15 minutes, 14.55 seconds improved his own school record, which he last at the 1999 Pac-10 finals.

Nelson, a 1996 Carson High School graduate, also finished 11th in both the 400 individual medley and the 500 freestyle. He shaved four seconds off his previous season best in the 500 freestyle with a 4:24.70 effort that gave him third in the consolation final (a time that ranks fourth on Washington's all-time list for the event). His time in the 400 I.M. was 3:54.30.

Josh Newman, another Carson High graduate, also finished 18th in the 200 backstroke with a 1:54.19 clocking.

Washington finished sixth in the team standings during the three-day meet with a total of 209.5 points. Stanford rolled up 794 points to capture its 19th consecutive conference championship.

Nelson, a fourth-year veteran and team co-captain at Washington, also qualified in each of his three events to compete at the NCAA Men's Championships on March 23-25 in Minneapolis, Minn. Nelson's times at the conference meet also qualified to compete at the U.S. Olympic Trials this August in Indianapolis, Ind.

Matt Seibrandt, who helped Galena High School win Northern 4A zone tournament championships in 1997 and '98, is now out front for national tournament-bound College of Southern Idaho in Twin Falls.

Seibrandt, a 6-foot-8 senior forward, is the leading scorer and rebounder for the Golden Eagles (28-5), who begin play in the National Junior College Athletic Association Men's Division I Tournament on Tuesday in Hutchinson, Kan. Southern Idaho plays play Cochise, Ariz. (25-7) in the first round.

Seibrandt is averaging 14.5 points, shooting 61-percent from the field, and pulling down 6.9 rebounds this season. He had 15 points, six assists and five rebounds in Southern Idaho's 84-76 win against Dixie College in the regional finals.

The Golden Eagles have won 10 straight games and are averaging 94.1 points on the season.

Seibrandt transferred to Southern Idaho after redshirting at UNLV last year. He was Nevada's Gatorade State Player of the Year for Galena in 1998.
