Columnist, book featured at state museum

Noted columnist Rollan Melton will be at a book signing Friday at the Nevada State Museum in Carson City.

Melton, a widely read columnist for the Gazette Journal in Reno, recently completed "Sonny's Story: A Journalist's Memoir." He relates a life filled with challenges, from a childhood of poverty and instability and dim prospects, to his first job with the Fallon Standard, to an eventual rise to he presidency of Speidel newspaper group and to his current life as a writer living in Reno.

"It is appropriate for the Nevada State Museum to have the honor of hosting Rollie," said Doug Mishler, administrator of the Nevada Division of Museums and History. "He has always been an avid support of Nevada's cultural resources."

"Sonny's Story" was published by the Oral History Program at the University of Nevada, Reno. It runs 240 pages with 46 photos and will be available for purchase at the book signing.

The Nevada State Museum, 600 N. Carson St., opens at 4 p.m. for the signing and will be open until 6 p.m. After 4:30 p.m. use the park entrance on the north side of the museum complex will be open. The event includes refreshments.
