The Dayton High School volleyball team picked up one of the wins it needed to secure a trip to the 3A state tournament in Las Vegas.

Unfortunately for the Dust Devils, they weren't able to get the second and wound up with a third-place finish in the 3A Division II tournament Saturday in Hawthorne.

Dayton, which finished third during the regular season, opened with a come-from-behind three-set victory against Whittell. The Dust Devils won that match 12-15, 15-10, 15-12, sparked by Cindy Wanbaugh's 12 points (three aces). Jeanette Macall also contributed five kills and five stuff blocks.

After losing to host-Mineral County, 15-6, 15-4, Dayton dropped into the losers bracket and was then knocked out of the double elimination tournament by Whittell. The Warriors defeated the Dust Devils in straight games, 15-7, 16-14. Macall was credited with six kills. Whittell's Shannon McGlothlin had 12 kills and Erin Zaskoda 11 for Whittell.

Mineral County defeated Whittell in the final 15-1, 15-11.

The two finalists now advance to the 3A state tournament, which starts Thursday at Green Valley High School in Henderson.
