HENDERSON - It took the team a lot longer than it anticipated, but the Carson High School girls basketball team finally won the Select Division of the Lady Wolves Classic Tournament held at Basic High.
The Senators won the championship by defeating South Kitsap High from Port Orchard, Wash., 32-20, on Thursday.
Carson had shown up to play in the championship game at 9:30 a.m., but upon arrival its arrival at Basic High the team found out it wouldn't play until 6 p.m. With the team's flight from Vegas headed north scheduled to leave at 8:20 p.m., the Senators couldn't afford an overtime game.
Carson's defense in the second half made sure that there would be no overtime, as the Senators limited South Kitsap to just six second half points.
"We did a good job of shutting them down on the inside and they weren't hitting from the outside," said Carson coach Paul Croghan.
Alyson Thurman led the Senators in scoring with 12 points, and Pam Williams added 10 points. Both were candidates to make the all-tournament team, but the Senators left the tournament before those results were announced.
Carson won four straight games to take the 16-team Select Division Tournament. An Elite Division Tournament was also played simultaneously at the Wolves Classic.
"It was a good trip in that we had four good games on the road and got some good experience," Croghan said.
Carson resumes play on Monday at the McQueen Tournament in Reno.
