Enjoy our mild winter temperatures

For those people who do not like cold weather, ice and snow, you can now begin to rejoice.

Today is the Winter Solstice, which officially marks the first day of winter. More importantly, it also marks the beginning of longer and longer days as we slowly move back to the warmth of summer.

Yes, believe it or not, summer is coming!

However Old Man Winter still has a very firm grip on the Northern Hemisphere.

- And if you don't believe so, here are some weather conditions as reported for selected locations in Alaska on Dec. 20:

Barrow: -24 degrees and a 13 MPH wind produced a wind chill of -67 degrees. 24 hours of darkness.

Wainwright: -35 degrees and a 6 MPH wind produced a wind chill of -54 degrees. 24 hours of darkness.

Umiat: -44 degrees. No wind. 24 hours of darkness.

Deadhorse: -33 degrees. No wind. 24 hours of darkness.

Kotzebue: -5 degrees with a 13 MPH wind produced a wind chill of -41 degrees. Sunrise at 12:54 noon. Sunset at 2:40 p.m.

- On the warmer side:

Fairbanks: 0 degrees. No wind. Sunrise at 10:56 a.m. Sunset at 2:40 p.m.

Denali National Park: 27 degrees with a 6 MPH wind produced a wind chill of 17 degrees. Sunrise at 10:41 a.m. Sunset at 3:03 p.m.
