YERINGTON - A funeral mass is scheduled Thursday for former Nevada Assemblyman John Frank Giomi, who died Saturday at a Reno hospital. He was 83.

The service at Holy Family Catholic Church in Yerington will be preceded by a rosary Wednesday evening at the church.

Giomi was born March 6, 1917, in Mason Valley, graduated in 1941 from the University of Nevada, Reno, and worked for the U.S. Soil Conservation Service before being drafted into the Army in 1942.

He was captured by the Germans during the Battle of the Bulge and spent the final months of the war as a POW.

Giomi was elected to the state Assembly in 1954 and served until 1966. He was active in numerous community affairs, and with other family members sold hardware and farm machinery for years in the Yerington area. He finally retired in 1995.

Giomi is survived by his wife of 50 years, Jere, daughter Patti Dohoney and son Joe, all of Yerington; and son John of Fallbrook, Calif.
