An investigation into alleged steroid distribution and use by Carson High School athletes has led to the arrest of one and may lead to others.

Although Chief Sheriff's Deputy Scott Burau is tight-lipped about the investigation, he did confirm that the sheriff's department believes some athletes have used the performance-enhancing drug.

"All I can say is that the investigation is ongoing," he said. "We are interviewing students about present usage and past-tense usage. A number of people interviewed are high school athletes."

Burau said information about the department's findings will be available next week.

Andrew Maier, 18, was arrested Feb. 29 at South Carson and South Stewart streets. He was charged with possession of steroids and a hypodermic needle. Shortly after his arrest, he was released on $2,500 bail.

Maier, a member of the football team sidelined this season by four concussions, is scheduled for a justice court arraignment on April 24.

"What launched the investigation was an anonymous tip," Burau said. "And then the information spread like wildfire through the school."

The sheriff's department is working alone on the investigation. Burau said the steroids already confiscated appear to be coming from a source outside of the state or country.

"We believe the drugs were illicitly manufactured, not prescribed," he said.

Carson High School Principle Glen Adair was not available for comment on Thursday or Friday.
